It consists of colorful clouds and dusty dark nebulae otherwisetoo faint for your eye to see, though.At top right, theCalifornia Nebula (aka NGC 1499) does have afamiliar shape.Its coastline is over 60 light-years long and liessome 1,500 light-years away.The nebula's pronounced reddish glow is from hydrogen atoms ionizedby luminous blue star Xi Persei just below it.Near bottom center, the famousPleiades star cluster is some 400light-years distant and around 15 light-yearsacross.Its spectacular blue color is due to the reflection of starlightby interstellar dust.In between are hot stars of the Perseus OB2association and dusty,dark nebulae along the edge of the nearby,massive Taurus and Perseus molecular clouds. Emission from unusually abundant ionized carbon monoxide (CO+)molecules fluorescing in sunlightis largely responsible for the telltale blue tint of theremarkablecomet's tail.The comet was about 17 light minutesfrom Earth.

Barnard's 1919catalog of dark markings in the sky.All are interstellar dust clouds, blocking thelight from background stars in the case of Barnard'sdark nebulae.For vdB 31, the dust preferentially reflects the bluish starlightfrom embedded, hot, variable star AB Aurigae.Exploring theenvironsof AB Aurigae with the Hubble Space Telescope hasrevealed the several million year young star is itself surrounded byflattened dusty diskwith evidence for the ongoing formationof a planetary system.AB Aurigae is about 470 light-years away.At that distance this cosmic canvas would span about four light-years.
