In fact, it is a galaxy -- or at least part of one: the photogenicSombrero Galaxy,one of the largest galaxies in the nearbyVirgo Cluster of Galaxies. The dark band ofdust that obscures the mid-section of theSombrero Galaxy in optical light actuallyglows brightly in infrared light. The featured image, digitally sharpened, shows theinfraredglow, recently recorded by the orbitingSpitzer Space Telescope, superposed in false-color on anexisting image taken byNASA's Hubble Space Telescope in visible light.The SombreroGalaxy, also known asM104, spans about 50,000 light years across and lies 28 million light years away. M104can be seen with a small telescope in the direction of theconstellation Virgo.

It is a large galaxy of over 100 billion stars with well-defined spiral arms that is similar to our own Milky Way Galaxy. One of the brightest members of the Virgo Cluster of galaxies, M100 (alias NGC 4321) is 56 million light-years distant toward the constellation of Berenice's Hair (Coma Berenices). This Hubble Space Telescope image of M100 was taken with the Wide Field Camera 3 and accentuates bright blue star clusters and intricate winding dust lanes which are hallmarks of this class of galaxies. Studies of variable stars in M100 have played an important role in determining the size and age of the Universe.

In thefeatured all-sky map from theCOBE satellite in 1993,microwave light in the Earth's direction of motion appearsblueshifted and hence hotter, whilemicrowave light on the opposite side of the sky isredshifted and colder. The map indicates that theLocal Group moves at about 600 kilometers per second relative to thisprimordial radiation. This high speed was initially unexpected and its magnitude is still unexplained.
