{lamp/}原文:{mtitle title=""/}Image Credit & <ahref="lib/about_apod.html#srapply">Copyright:Sage GrayExplanation: A prominent impact siteanchored in the lunar Oceanus Procellarum,Copernicus crater is at the center of thistelescopic portrait inlight and shadow.Caught in stacked and sharpened video frames recorded on April 14 at3:30am UTC, the lunar terminator, or boundary between night and day, cuts across the middle of the 93 kilometer diameter crater.Sunlight is just beginning to strike itstall western wallsbut doesn't yet shine on lower terrain nearby, briefly extending the crater's outline into the lunar nightside. At that moment standingatCopernicus crater you could watch the sunrise, anevent that happens at Copernicus every 29.5 days.Of course that corresponds to a lunar month or a lunation, the timebetween consecutive Full Moons asseen from planet Earth.

(Moon Occults Saturn)
{lamp/}原文:{mtitle title="Moon Occults Saturn"/}Image Credit & Copyright: Cory SchmitzExplanation: Sometimes Saturn disappears. It doesn't really go away, though, it just disappears from view when our Moon moves in front. Such a Saturnian eclipse was visible along a small swath of Earth -- from Brazil to Sri Lanka -- near the end of last month. The featured color image is a digital fusion of the clearest images captured by successive videos of the event taken in red, green, and blue, and taken separately for Saturn and the comparative bright Moon. The exposures were taken from South Africa just before occultation -- and also just before sunrise. When Saturn re-appeared on the other side of the Moon almost two hours later, the Sun had risen. This year, eclipses of Saturn by the Moon occur almost monthly, but, unfortunately, are visible only to those with the right location and with clear and dark skies.

(Total Solar Eclipse Corona in HDR)
{lamp/}原文:{mtitle title="Total Solar Eclipse Corona in HDR"/}Image Credit & Copyright: Nicolas LefaudeuxExplanation: How great was the Great American Eclipse? The featured HDR image shows it to be perhaps greater than we knew.On August 21 of last year, the Moon blocked the Sun for a few minutes along a narrow path across the USA.Although one of the most photographed events in human history, this image -- only recently completed after an extraordinary amount of digital processing -- shows one of the most detailed depictions of a solar corona ever taken. Composed of extremely hot gas, the solar corona is only visible to the unaided eye during a total solar eclipse. The featured image combined over 70 images of different time exposures. The series of complementary HDR images recovered enough detail to see motion of the solar corona. The images were taken in Unity, Oregon in the morning to get steady atmospheric seeing conditions. The next total solar eclipse visible on Earth will be in 2019 July, while the next one visible across North America and the USA will occur in 2024 April.

(Equinox Sunset)
{lamp/}原文:{mtitle title="Equinox Sunset"/}Credit & Copyright: Tamas Ladanyi(TWAN)Explanation: Often inspiring, or offering a moment forcontemplation, a sunset isprobably the most commonly photographed celestialevent. But this uncommonly beautifulsunset picture was taken on a special day,the Equinox on September 22.Marking the astronomical changeof seasons,on that day Earth dwellers experiencednearly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hoursof darkness (an equal night). Reflected in the calm waters of Lake Balaton with a motionless sailboatin silhouette, the Sun is setting due west and heading south acrossthe celestial equator. In the background lies the Benedictine Archabbeyof Tihany, Hungary.

(A View to the Sunset)
2008年05月31日:日落时分-(A View to the Sunset)--原图下载{mtitle title="日落时分"/}Credit & Copyright: Stefan Seip(TWAN)说明: 在地球的每一天,如果太阳没入彩霞满天的西方地平线,就会出现动人心弦的日落。 {lamp/}原文:{mtitle title="A View to the Sunset"/}Credit & Copyright: Stefan Seip(TWAN)Explanation: Each day on planet Earthcan have a dramatic ending as theSun setsbelow thecolorfulwestern horizon.Often inspiring, or offering a moment for contemplation,a sunset is perhaps the single mostphotographed celestialevent.Did you recognize this as a picture of one?The image actually is a single exposure of the setting Sunrecorded near Wasserberg, Germany on May 11.To create the uncommon sunset view the photographer used adigital camera and a zoom lens (a lens with an adjustablefocal length).During the 1/6 second long exposure he smoothly changed thefocal length while simultaneously rotating the camera, altering the image scale and orientation. The result transforms an objective depiction of natureinto an artisticabstraction.

(Simulated Transit of Mercury)
{lamp/}原文:{mtitle title="Simulated Transit of Mercury"/}Credit & Copyright: Greg PiepolExplanation: Mercury, the solar system's innermost planet, will spend about five hours crossingin front of the Suntoday - beginning at 1912UT(2:12pm EST), November 8.Specially equipped telescopes are highly recommended to safelyspot the planet's diminutivesilhouette however, as Mercury shouldappear about 200 times smaller than the enormous solar disk. This simulatedview is based on a filtered solar image recorded on November 3rd.It shows active regions andtheMercury transit across the Sunat six positionsfrom lowerleft to middle right.Depending on your location, the Sun may not be abovethe horizon during the entire transit, but webcasts ofthe event areplanned - including one using images from thesun-staring SOHO spacecraft. This is the second of 14 transits of Mercury during the21st century. The next similar event will be a transit of Venus inJune of 2012.
